The Future of Work for SMEs

As we move further into the 21st century, the nature of work is undergoing a significant transformation, particularly for Small and Medium enterprises. Emerging technologies and changing workforce dynamics are changing the future of work in ways that present both challenges and opportunities.

Remote & Hybrid Working

Initially the domain of tech companies and large enterprises, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of remote and hybrid working arrangements. SMEs can benefit from these arrangements, especially those in remote or regional areas where geographical restrictions previously limited the talent pool of people they could hire.

Adoption of Advanced Technologies

AI is everywhere and many small businesses are already benefitting from utilising this technology, albeit in a limited fashion to date. AI technologies that currently require expertise to use – for example those that require using your own data rather than public data – will become more accessible as those tools are added to common software platforms used by SMEs like CRM and accounting systems.

Collaboration & Communication Tools

Spurred on by the popularity of remote & hybrid working arrangements, effective collaboration and communication tools are being adopted by SMEs at an increasing rate. Many businesses now use Microsoft Office 365 or Google Workspace enabling efficient collaboration on files and communication using video conferencing. But this is just the beginning. For example, there are a myriad of project, scheduling and task management tools that allow staff to collaborate effectively and improve work efficiency.
